Cycling Greenways Across Ireland

Discover the best leisure bike routes — from coastal paths to canal towways

Why Choose Greenway Cycling

Ireland's greenways aren't just bike paths — they're gateways to some of the country's most beautiful landscapes. We've researched every major route so you don't have to.

Whether you're planning a weekend escape or a serious cycling adventure, we've got detailed guides for the Great Western Greenway, Waterford Greenway, Royal Canal path, and hidden gems through the Burren. Our guides include elevation profiles, best stopping points, accommodation suggestions, and real tips from local cyclists who ride these routes regularly.

Each greenway has its own character. Some are flat and family-friendly, others challenge your legs and reward you with stunning views. We help you find the right fit for your skill level and what you're looking for in a ride.

Ciara Doherty

Burren & Adventure Cycling Lead

"We've cycled the Great Western Greenway three times now and every time we find something we missed. Sarah's guide was so detailed — elevation, coffee stops, even bathroom locations. That's the kind of stuff you actually need to know."

Emma & David Clarke

Weekend cyclists from Cork

"Wasn't sure if the Burren routes were suitable for intermediate riders. Michael's breakdown of the technical sections and alternative routes made it totally doable. We actually had a blast."

Liam Murphy

"The Royal Canal guide saved us hours. Locals love that path but you'd never find half the good spots without insider knowledge. Worth every word."

Common Questions

May through September offers the best weather and longest daylight. Spring is beautiful with wildflowers, but weather can be unpredictable. Summer is warmest but busier. Autumn has fewer crowds and dramatic light. Winter is doable but prepare for rain and shorter days.

Most greenways are paved and flat, which makes them excellent for beginners. The Great Western Greenway and Waterford Greenway are particularly beginner-friendly. The Burren routes are more challenging. We rate every route's difficulty so you know what you're getting into.

Hybrid bikes work perfectly on most greenways. Road bikes are fine on paved sections but can struggle if you encounter gravel. Mountain bikes are overkill for flat routes but great for Burren terrain. Our guides specify surface types so you can choose the right bike.

Absolutely. The Great Western Greenway is specifically designed for families. Flat terrain, dedicated path, plenty of stopping points. Our guides highlight family-friendly sections, places to rest, and bike rental options.

Every major greenway has rental shops nearby. We include rental locations and contact info in our detailed guides. Most offer hourly, daily, and weekly rates. Advance booking is smart during peak season.
